Professor Telahun is a Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health and is currently a National Quality Strategy Advisor and Healthcare Services Quality Directorate for the Federal Ministry of Health, Ethiopia. He obtained Doctor of Medicine (1981) and Specialty Certificate in Pediatrics and Child Health (1987) from School of Medicine, Addis Ababa University. He received MPH from School of Public Health Brussels, Belgium, (1990) Post Graduate diploma in International Research Ethics, University of Cape Town (2006) and Diploma in Vitrual Leadership Development (2008). He was an International Research Fellow at the International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (1994-96). He served in both Gondar and Addis Ababa Universities as Department Head, Assistant Dean and Medical Director of Gondar Teaching Hospital. Professor Telahun is lead trainer in IMNCI, MLM Immunization, Pediatric HIV, PMTCT, Pediatric Nutrition. He was also member of Medical Faculty Research and Publication Committee and Addis Ababa University Senate Research and Publication Committee. He was promoted to Full Professorship in Pediatrics and Child Health since 2009 by Addis Ababa University. He is active in all policy dialogues in Pediatrics and Child Health. In addition to the different committees he served at FMOH and AAU he is currently Chairperson of National Polio Expert Committee (FMOH) and Vice-Chairperson of National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG). He is also Chairperson of National Research Ethics Review Committee (Ministry of Science and Technology). He was member of the Editorial board of Ethiopian Medical Journal (2011-2015). He is active in professional associations and societies both national and International (eg. General Secretary of Ethiopian Medical Association 1996-2002, President of Ethiopian Pediatric Society 2011-2015) He was founding member of East African Pediatric Association (EAPA) and Pediatrics AIDS Treatment for Africa (PATA). He conducted and participated in many research projects that include clinical trials, epidemiological, operational and program assessments. His areas of work include pediatrics diarrhoea, immunization, infectious diseases and pediatric nutrition. He is also passionate on research and medical ethics. Professor Telahun has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on general pediatrics, diarrheal diseases, pediatric nutrition and research ethics. He is Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences since 2016.
